What is golden hour?

Golden hour is the time around sunset when the sun is low above the horizon. The light is warm and soft, shadows are long and skin tones look their best. For aerial footage it means the landscape gains depth, water sparkles and the sky joins in.

How do we work it out?

We calculate the position of the sun for your date and place. Golden hour starts when the sun is still about 6 degrees above the horizon and lasts until shortly after sunset. Then comes blue hour: the blue twilight just after the sun has set.

How we plan it

  • We usually plan the couple shoot about fifteen minutes into golden hour.
  • In summer, golden hour falls late in the evening, often during dinner or the party. A short ten-minute break is enough.
  • Clouds are no problem: a light cloud cover actually softens the light. Only rain and strong wind keep us on the ground.
